ABOUT THE ARTIST
Susan Outlaw was born in Mainz, Germany in 1973 and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1975 – settling in a small rural community in Southern Ontario. Weekend hikes with her family fostered an early appreciation for the natural world, laying the foundation for a lifelong connection to the landscape.
Today, Susan lives with her family in Ancaster, Ontario, a historic community nestled within the Niagara Escarpment. Surrounded by rich farmland, expansive forests, and the quiet charm of small-town life, she draws much of her inspiration from the surrounding landscape, as well as from the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines when travel permits.
Working across a diverse range of subjects, including landscapes, seascapes, still life, and urban settings, Susan approaches painting as an intuitive and contemplative practice. Her work begins with a personal response to a place or scene that moves her emotionally or spiritually. Through colour, atmosphere, and the interplay of light and form, she seeks to capture not simply what she sees, but what she feels.
At the heart of Susan’s practice is a belief in the restorative power of art and the natural world. In a culture increasingly shaped by relentless schedules, congested commutes, and the demands of modern life, she views painting as an invitation to pause, reconnect, and find stillness. Her hope is that each work offers the viewer a moment of wonder, a sense of escape, and an opportunity to rediscover a feeling of peace and balance.
After more than fifteen years of in-house gallery representation, Susan now works primarily as a self-represented artist. She values the meaningful connections that develop between artist and collector and continues to embrace opportunities to share her work with new audiences. Her paintings can also be purchased at the Art Gallery of Burlington Shop, and her work is also featured in the McMaster Fine Art online gallery.
Since 2016, Susan has taught at the Dundas Valley School of Art and has led workshops by invitation throughout Ontario. She also offers seasonal plein air painting courses each spring and fall, sharing her passion for observing and interpreting the natural world directly from life.
